Day 3 of the 30-Day Diet Kick-Up-the-Arser

Why Fats Don’t Make You Fat

But Misinformation Might...

First, carbs got unfairly blamed for making people fat. Now it’s time for the next falsely accused culprit: fats.

For years, low-fat diets were pushed harder than a broken supermarket trolley. Suddenly, everything was “low-fat,” “fat-free,” or “99% less flavour.” Turns out, that was nonsense.

Do Fats Really Make You Gain Fat?

Short answer: No.
Longer answer: Also, no.

But fats do contain more calories per gram than protein and carbs:

Protein & Carbs = 4 calories per gram
Fat = 9 calories per gram
So yes, eat too much fat and you’ll gain weight, just like if you overeat anything.

But cutting fats out completely? Terrible idea.

Why Healthy Fats Are Essential

  1. They regulate your hormones, which in turn keep your body running smoothly
  2. They support brain function: your brain is primarily fat. If you’re eating no fat, good luck thinking straight.
  3. They help absorb essential vitamins A, D, E & K, so by skipping fat, you miss essential nutrients.
  4. They keep you fuller for longer, making you less likely to snack throughout the day or binge at night.

‘Good vs Bad’ Fats: What To Eat More (and less) of

The ‘good’ fats (eat more): olive oil, avocados, nuts, fatty fish, eggs.
The not-so-great stuff (don’t live off): deep-fried everything, margarine, trans fats.
